Growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn my mother always told my brothers and I that we were royalty. No matter where we came from she made sure it did not dictate how we viewed ourselves. With the juvenile detention center just blocks away from my steps, it was easier to see myself as a prisoner. Although the center swallowed the surrounding buildings, it definitely was no palace for me. So I walked with my head up so my invisible crown would not fall. I made it through school, worked here and there until I decided to work for myself. And some 20 plus odd years later life put me in a movie theatre watching a documentary about a great artist who also saw the crown as a symbol for himself, Jean-Michel Basquiat. His story is great and tragic at the same time. I left the theatre inspired and months later I decided to do what Basquiat did when he was inspired. I made art. So I encourage all of us to do the same. Let’s make art. Let’s believe. Let’s Be Royalty. Winter 2010. Coming Soon.
